Until 1937, the year of its prohibition, tinctures were the most common form of medicinal cannabis in the United States. Tinctures are a liquid concentrate manufactured through an alcohol extraction process, which extracts many of the beneficial cannabinoids. Just a few drops under the tongue may be a suitable dose, and patients can safely apply additional doses as needed. Today, tinctures are available in a multitude of flavors and are an alternative for patients who choose not to smoke.
